The hetairai of ancient Athens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Greek word hetaira<\/em> means “female companion” \u2014 a euphemism that was also a statement of intent. The hetaira<\/a> of classical Athens was a courtesan, and paid relationships were part of the profession; what set her apart from the pornai of the harbour quarters was not the absence of commerce but everything that came in addition. Hetairai were educated and musically trained \u2014 they danced, sang, played the aulos and the kithara \u2014 and they had access to rooms that respectable citizen wives were never permitted to enter. The wife belonged to the household, the oikos; the symposium, the room of wine, argument and philosophy, belonged to men. And to the hetairai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most celebrated woman in this world is also the most contested. Aspasia, the companion of Pericles, is remembered by ancient tradition as a hetaira whose house drew the thinkers of the age \u2014 Socrates is said to have been among her guests. Modern scholarship counsels caution: much of that picture descends from hostile comedy and later sources, and whether Aspasia was a hetaira at all remains an open question. What is certain is how stubbornly the image has endured \u2014 an era that could accommodate an intelligent woman only as an anomaly seems to have been able to imagine its most intelligent one in this single role alone.<\/p>\n\n\n

Oiran and tay\u016b: Japan’s hierarchy of the arts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No culture classified the courtesan with greater precision than Japan. In the Yoshiwara, Edo’s licensed pleasure quarter, the summit of the hierarchy first belonged to the tay\u016b \u2014 a woman whose training in tea ceremony, calligraphy, poetry and music took years to complete, and who retained the rare privilege of choosing her own guests. Around 1750, the term oiran<\/a> arose in that same quarter for the high ranks as a whole; the old tay\u016b rank disappeared from the Yoshiwara around 1761, and from then on the highest oiran stood at the top, sharply distinguished from the ordinary y\u016bjo beneath them. The great courtesans carried the epithet keisei<\/em> \u2014 “castle-topplers” \u2014 women whose wit and presence were reputed to bring even powerful men to their knees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An ever more rigid etiquette, and prices to match, estranged them from the rising merchant class, which turned instead to the more approachable geisha \u2014 entertainers and artists, emphatically not courtesans, a distinction Japan maintains to this day. The reforms of the early Meiji era altered the legal position of the women in the quarters, but the Yoshiwara itself endured well into the twentieth century; it was Japan’s Prostitution Prevention Law of 1956, fully in force from 1958, that finally brought this world to an end. What survives is the tay\u016b as a figure of cultural memory \u2014 and the recognition that Japan once treated companionship as an art form in its own right.<\/p>\n\n\n

Tawaifs: the voice of the Mughal courts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the Indian subcontinent, the courtesan was the tawaif<\/a> \u2014 singer, dancer and poet in one person, entertaining the nobility of the Mughal era and held in the highest regard at the courts of Lucknow. Her standing reached well past entertainment. Tawaifs were regarded as custodians of music, poetry and social refinement; young aristocrats were sent to them to acquire manners, and married women of the upper classes copied their fashions, their jewellery, their way of dressing their hair. Most striking is the economic independence that successful tawaifs could attain \u2014 their own establishments, their own musicians and tutors, their own wealth, an extraordinary position for a woman of that age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their decline had many causes. After 1857, the destruction of court patronage removed their economic foundation, and the British colonial administration campaigned against them, reducing them in its own vocabulary to “nautch girls”. But Indian reform movements that turned against salon dancing, changing ideals of respectable femininity and the rise of new entertainment industries all played their part as well. Nor did the culture of the tawaifs ever vanish entirely \u2014 many performers found their way onto the theatre stage, into the early recording industry and into cinema, where their musical inheritance lived on. What remains, even so, is a sobering lesson in how completely the courtesan’s position depended on the goodwill of whoever held power.<\/p>\n\n\n

Venice and the cortigiana onesta<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Renaissance Venice recognised two classes of courtesan: the cortigiana di lume, the plain commercial form, and the cortigiana onesta \u2014 the “honoured courtesan”, lettered, cultivated and moving within the circles of the elite, though never enjoying its legal protections. Her most famous representative, Veronica Franco<\/a> (c. 1546\u20131591), was also one of the remarkable poets of her century. She published her Terze rime in 1575, frequented the literary salon of Domenico Venier, and received Henry III of France in 1574. She played the lute and the spinet, was deeply versed in Greek and Roman literature, and maintained her own household of children, tutors and servants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
