It begins with a young man grieving for a woman he could not keep. Alexandre Dumas fils was twenty when he met Marie Duplessis, among the most sought-after courtesans of the Parisian demi-monde. She died in 1847, aged twenty-three; he wrote The Lady of the Camellias<\/a> in a matter of weeks and published it in 1848. Marie became Marguerite Gautier, the author became Armand Duval, and a complicated woman became a character who gives up everything for love and then dies \u2014 of consumption, of society, of the economics of her own life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four years later Dumas put the story on stage; a year after that Verdi made it La traviata<\/a>, first performed at La Fenice on 6 March 1853. One detail of its making is telling. Verdi and his librettist Piave wanted a contemporary setting; the opera house insisted the action be pushed back to around 1700. A courtesan who looked like a lady from one’s own box was more than the audience could be asked to bear, and productions in modern dress only took hold in the 1880s. That enforced distance is the first stereotype: companionship as something one may admire, provided it is kept far enough away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What survived is the grammar of tragedy. The courtesan may love, but she may not stay. Hollywood and the fairy tale: Pretty Woman<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A hundred and forty years after Dumas, Hollywood turned the tragedy on its head and let it end well. Pretty Woman<\/a> (1990, directed by Garry Marshall) is the most-quoted story about paid companionship there is, and at heart it is a Pygmalion fairy tale: the businessman engages Vivian for a week of social engagements, the hotel manager teaches her the cutlery, Rodeo Drive does the rest.
