A stay on the Golden Mile in February is a different proposition from the same address in August, and a good many regulars prefer it.

Marbella was a fishing town of a few hundred people in 1945 and is now the densest concentration of luxury on the Spanish coast, and a single decision separates the two. Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe bought the finca Santa Margarita in 1947, opened it as the Marbella Club in 1954, and sold plots to friends drawn from European aristocracy and industry; José Banús added the marina in 1970, designing it as an Andalusian village rather than the high-rise development the era expected. Few stretches of European coast have been watched as closely ever since, which is exactly why confidentiality here begins with how an inquiry is handled rather than at a hotel reception — nothing announced, nothing shared, previous arrangements never mentioned. That holds equally for a quieter, more familiar register across several days.
Behind the coast the country changes quickly. The Sierra Blanca rises directly above the town, and the road through it reaches Ronda and the white villages in about an hour — the standard day away from the sea. Along the coast, Málaga lies an hour east with its museums and its own airport, Sotogrande a similar distance west, and Madrid is a short flight or a fast train connection from there, as are the other international destinations our network covers.
