The confidentiality an international visitor expects on Capri does not begin at the hotel reception — it shapes every line of correspondence in advance. The single most useful thing to know about Capri is that it empties. From mid-morning the boats arrive at Marina Grande; by around six in the evening most visitors have gone back across the water, leaving a very small island to its residents and to the few who stayed. The Piazzetta, which at three in the afternoon is the most congested square in the Bay of Naples, is two dozen tables by nine at night. That is why a dinner together in one of the lanes behind Via Camerelle bears no resemblance to the same address at lunchtime, and why an overnight stay is the substance of a Capri trip rather than its frame.
The annual season is more conventional: mid-April to October, with the houses following it closely and May, June and September the best of it. Whoever stays should plan the morning differently from the day visitors — the grottoes and Villa Jovis early, the island from a boat at midday, the afternoon up in Anacapri. Compared with the other islands our network covers, the contrast is instructive: Sardinia compresses its whole social calendar into about ten weeks of summer, while Capri’s defining rhythm is not annual at all but daily, and it repeats three hundred times a year.
