Behind the town lies an island with little in common with the harbour picture. The Stari Grad Plain is a Greek land division laid out in the fourth century BC, its dry-stone walls still standing and its parcels farmed continuously for some 2,400 years; above it sit Velo Grablje and Brusje, the old lavender villages, half-abandoned and purple for a few weeks in early summer. By way of Split. Passenger catamarans run to Hvar town in about an hour; the car ferry docks at Stari Grad, some twenty kilometres away. The nearest airports are Split and Brač on the mainland side. Crossings are worth reserving early for the summer months.
May to October. Late May, June and September are the most comfortable weeks, while July and August bring heat and a great deal of traffic. For the lavender inland, travel between roughly mid-June and mid-July; after the harvest the fields are cut back.
The loud part is confined to a handful of addresses around the harbour and is easily avoided. Stari Grad, the plain behind it and the Pakleni Islands are quiet, and choosing a house away from the promenade changes the character of a stay entirely.
As experience shows, from twelve hours, meaning an overnight stay; one or two days, or travel companionship of several days, are more usual. Short meetings do not suit an island reached only by ferry or catamaran. Each companion sets her own minimum.

Yes. Hvar sits in the Adriatic, so the Dalmatian coast is the natural continuation, and for a longer journey an opening or closing stage in Venice works well. Such routes are suggestions rather than fixed programmes and are settled before confirmation.
