Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean, and the part of it that draws almost all its visitors accounts for barely one per cent of its coastline. The Costa Smeralda starts north of Olbia and ends some fifty-five kilometres later; behind it lies an island with a language of its own, cork-oak forests and roughly seven thousand surviving nuraghi — the oldest architecture in western Europe. A quarter of an hour behind the harbour at Porto Cervo, San Pantaleo is already a different world of granite and market days. Seeing only the coast costs a visitor nothing essential, but it is worth knowing how small a fragment that coast is.
That fragment is a world of small circles. What is said one evening on the piazzetta above the harbour is known in two other houses by the following lunchtime, and the yachts in the marina have known each other for years. Confidentiality here is less a virtue than a practical necessity, and our mediation agency treats it as such: nothing shared, nothing announced, previous arrangements never mentioned. Whether you are in a house above the bay or a villa invisible from the road changes nothing about that, and it applies equally to a quieter, more familiar register across several days.
Few destinations of this standing compress so much into so little time. The houses open earlier than they once did — the Cervo Hotel in late March and Cala di Volpe in mid-April for 2026 — but the real business runs from June to September, with an August that overwhelms everything around it, and by late October the coast is closed until spring. September is the exception worth planning for: the regatta fortnight brings back a set who have known Porto Cervo since the 1970s, and a dinner on the harbour that week bears no resemblance to the same table in the first fortnight of August.

The Costa Smeralda season is short and dense. The major houses now open early — in 2026 the Cervo Hotel on 27 March and Cala di Volpe on 16 April — the social peak falls in August, and by late October the coast is shut. June and the first half of September are the most comfortable weeks.
A stretch of roughly fifty-five kilometres at the island’s north-eastern tip, developed from 1962 by the consortium around the Aga Khan. It is not Sardinia but a very small part of it — the island itself is the second largest in the Mediterranean.
Very much so. Fifteen minutes inland the Gallura begins, with granite villages and cork oaks; the interior holds some seven thousand nuraghi; and the south, around Pula and the Laguna di Nora, is a wholly different landscape. It does require a car and time.
The crowd changes. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has run the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup here each September since 1980, and the racing fleet brings back an older, quieter set. For many regulars it is the most agreeable week of the year.
